Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived in a musical family on 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the cousin of daughter to singing superstar Dionne. As a child, she sang in her New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. At the age of she turned fifteen, Houston was singing professionally with backing vocals alongside her mother for Chaka Khan's song from 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she was a model, and was featured on the Seventeen Cover. Also, she provided backing vocals to Lou Rawls and Jermaine. The quality of her work as the featured vocalist of New York funk group Material was noticed by big record companies, like Arista who she signed her contract in 1982, where she continued to work for the remainder of her life with them. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985, and was the most-seller album by an artist who was a rookie. Songs like The Greatest Love of All, How Can I Tell If You Give Love and Save All My Love were all released on the album. They enabled Houston to earn seven US top tens that surpassed even those of The Beatles. Album was sold out in US 3,000,000 copies and then increased to 25 million globally. It brought her first of her 6 Grammy Awards. The Whitney album followed in 1987 and the singles How Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to further build upon the success of her debut album. However, it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her status as one the world's most popular artists. While the movie and the performances of the actress were not well-received, the soundtrack album that featured her interpretation of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was her top single and album for several months. It sold more than 44 million copies around the world. That same year she was married to Bobby Brown who was a former New Edition singer. She had their sole daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown.
